Air Filter Tech Tip

Yes, I do keep on about air filters; however they are critically important and are a common cause of problems. Just like us every engine needs clean fresh air! The average chainsaw uses over 400 litres of air every minute (That’s 2x 44 gallon drums in the old language).

An average lawnmower uses nearly 450 litres a minute. All this air must be clean and dust free. Therefore the air filter has a big job to do, especially if the surrounding air is full of dust. E.g. dry dusty mowing conditions or a chainsaw with a blunt chain causing dust instead of chips from the cutting.

Another issue of which we were recently reminded is the need for fresh air. Sometimes water pumps or generators are sitting in an enclosed box or shelter during the time they are not being used. It is critical that an open sided shelter is then used, or even lift the unit out of the box shelter so that it gets clean air and is not breathing in its own exhaust. If the engine is in an enclosed space the air filter will soon block up with carbon and cause premature engine failure.

Check out the below video that will show you how to maintain your air filter on your chainsaw. Although this video is for a Husqvarna chainsaw the same principle applies for any air filter be it off a chainsaw or mower.
